WVU has gained an elite distinction for the fourth time in a row. The state’s flagship university was just reaffirmed with R1 status by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This is the highest possible research ranking an institute of higher education can obtain. WVU is the only R1 institution in West Virginia and one of just 187 colleges nationwide to earn the honor. Two major criteria schools must meet to receive the classification include spending at least $50 million a year on research and development and awarding at least 70 doctorates. In 2023, the year used for the R1 classification, WVU spent more than $246 million on research and granted more than 200 doctoral degrees.
